The Paper Parcel
The Paper Parcel took the narrator back to reality. When he arrived at the dance he immediately started to compare his costume with the others' costumes. He got to see how ridicules his brown paper parcel costume was.

"I was a kid wrapped in brown paper and wearing togs and sandshoes". That's when he noticed that a brown paper parcel isn't even closely a good idea to dress up for a dance. He tried to emphasize the poorness and dullness of his costume. Of course his date wasn't really impressed of his costume and she made him recognize that straight away. As a result the withdrawal of sexual perferment had weakened him. All his great hopes about the dance got destroyed by a brown paper parcel.

Just like in many situations the parents had something to do with his failure. The narrator gave a good example how parents think about their children's highlights. His mum thought that the ball would just be something like a kids dance because of that she didn't put much effort in finding a good costume. She just wanted something cheap that doesn't need much expense to make it. When she remembered about the dance she thought about that guy who turned up as this funny parcel and that's when it seemed to her as the perfect costume. When the narrator first hear about the crazy idea of his mother he was shocked and said right away he wasn't going to wear it.

So all his problems about the parcel have their origin in the mother's mistake.

Just like in many situations the parents had something to do with his failure. The narrator gave a good example how parents think about their children's highlights. It seems to be a curse that parents can't understand their children's aims and from generation to generation parents try to understand them, but it mostly turns out as a complete disaster. So tried the narrator's mother as well.

The ball turned into a total disaster caused by the weakness of sexual preferment and his mother's undoing and incompetence to understand the ball's enormous importance for the narrator. It blamed him but didn't make him learn from it and so this probably won't be the last blame for him.
